Check the application’s own messages first
Review the online account or tracker used for your application. Look for outstanding document requests, biometrics instructions, medical instructions or messages that require a response. Keep a record of submission dates and acknowledgements so you can distinguish a missing task from a period awaiting review.
Compare the correct processing guidance
Use IRCC’s current processing-time tool for the correct application category. Published times can change and do not predict the exact date of an individual decision. A case that needs additional review may take longer.
Prepare a clear enquiry
- Your application number and identifying details requested by IRCC.
- The application type and submission date.
- A short description of the outstanding issue.
- Dates and copies of relevant messages or previous enquiries.
- Any change in contact details or information IRCC has asked you to supply.
Use the official contact instructions for asking about or updating an application. Avoid sending repeated messages with different versions of the same facts.
Records requests are a separate process
An access or privacy request may obtain records held about the file, but it does not itself ask an officer to approve the application or guarantee faster processing. Read our GCMS and records-request guide if you want to understand that distinction.
If a document needs updating
Follow the specific instructions for replacement identification, a declaration or another requested record. Confirm any deadline before arranging notarization or commissioning. A signing appointment does not extend the application deadline or immigration status. Contact the office if IRCC has requested a document requiring our services.
