Transferring a Used Vehicle in Ontario

When transferring ownership of a used vehicle in Ontario, the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO)
requires specific documents, including the Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP) and the
Used Vehicle Transfer Form. These documents must be completed accurately by both the buyer
and the seller and are required for registering the vehicle under the new owner’s name.

Notaryspace assists with the notarization of Sworn Statements and other supporting documents required
during the transfer process, especially in cases where a vehicle is transferred between eligible family members.

Family Gift Transfers (Tax-Exempt Transfers)

In Ontario, you may transfer ownership of a used vehicle to a qualifying family member without paying
the Retail Sales Tax (RST). To complete this process, you may be required to sign and swear a
Sworn Statement for a Family Gift of a Used Motor Vehicle.

This form must be signed in front of a Notary Public or Commissioner of Oaths.
At Notaryspace, we notarize these forms and ensure they are properly executed for acceptance by ServiceOntario.

You must bring valid identification, such as:

  • Driver’s licence
  • Passport
  • Ontario Photo Card
  • Government-issued ID with full name and photo
